AI in Paid Media: Smarter Ads, New Ad Channels

AI across paid media - automated campaign types, AI-written ad copy, and the new ad surfaces inside assistants like ChatGPT. What to test and what to skip.

Updated

Paid media is where AI arrived first and where marketers control it least. The platforms automated bidding, then targeting, then creative assembly, and the practitioner’s job shifted from operating the machine to feeding it and auditing it. Now the second shift is starting: the AI assistants themselves are becoming ad channels, with inventory that behaves like nothing search or social trained us for.

My bias in this category is spend discipline. Automation that the platforms profit from deserves scrutiny, new channels deserve small tests before belief, and any claimed efficiency should survive contact with your own conversion data before it earns budget.

What changes with AI in paid

Two things at once. Inside existing channels, AI compresses the craft: copy variants, audience expansion and budget allocation that took a team now take a review cycle, which moves the leverage to whoever writes the constraints and checks the output. And beside the existing channels, conversational surfaces are opening paid inventory for the first time - placements matched to what a person is discussing with an assistant rather than what they typed into a search box, with measurement models still catching up to that difference.

The guides

ChatGPT ads: how they work and whether to buy in - the formats, targeting and measurement of OpenAI’s ad product after its 31-market European expansion, what OpenAI promises about answer integrity, and an honest framework for who should test now versus wait.

ChatGPT ad copy prompts for Google, Meta and LinkedIn - platform-specific prompts with official character limits and a compliance guardrail built in, for the channels you already run.

Google Smart Bidding: which strategy when - Target CPA, Target ROAS and the Maximize pair, the conversion volume each needs by Google’s own numbers, and the thrashing trap that restarts the learning period forever.

Bid strategy troubleshooting: why your ROAS is tanking - the diagnostic order for a smart bidding slump: measurement breaks and attribution changes first, conversion lag misread as decline, learning-period thrash, starved conversion volume, and only then the target itself.

Google Performance Max setup: the build, step by step - every decision screen in order: bidding without a premature target, asset groups with real variety, audience signals read as hints, and how to weigh Google’s 27% claim.

Performance Max assets: specs, quality and what to feed it - the full spec sheet on one page, what an Excellent Ad Strength actually takes, the footnote under Google’s 6% claim, and the video slot Google fills with an auto-generated collage if you leave it empty.

Performance Max guardrails to set before going live - brand exclusions, negative keywords, placement exclusions, conversion goal hygiene and the first-week checks, all set before the most automated campaign type spends a euro.

When Performance Max fails: mistakes and fixes - the diagnostic order for a live campaign with bad numbers: learning-period thrash, starved conversion volume, self-inflated reporting, channel mix and creative, and the fix-or-rebuild call.

Responsive search ads: feed the combination machine - the only search ad you can build now: how Google assembles your 15 headlines per query, what the Ad Strength rating is actually worth, and the two cases where pinning earns its cost.

Meta Advantage+ setup: the controls that remain - Meta’s answer to Performance Max: what the sales campaigns automate, the four hard constraints the AI still honors, and why the customer exclusion list is a measurement control, not just targeting.

When Meta Advantage+ underperforms: debugging and fixes - the diagnostic order for the Meta side: fair trial first, then the optimization target, the flattered reporting, the starved creative pool, and the campaigns the format was never right for.

Advantage+ creative: how Meta’s AI edits your ads - the quieter delegation at the ad level: every enhancement from touch-ups to generated backgrounds, which arrive switched on, the preview habit that catches them, and a one-paragraph team policy.

Lookalike audiences with AI: the seed is the strategy - Google and LinkedIn retired the classic lookalike and Meta demoted it to a suggestion, so what’s left is the input: seed lists built on value and recency, the exclusions that keep AI expansion honest, and how to read Meta’s own CPA claims.

Wasted ad spend audit: find the leaks in an afternoon - five checks ordered by likely yield: the search terms you actually paid for, junk placements, self-competition, the tracking meter, and the zombie settings nobody chose - with the ecosystem data on how much leaks.

Creative fatigue detection: when ads stop performing - what Meta’s own exposure data says fatigue does to conversion, the four signals that flag it early, the folklore thresholds to ignore, and a refresh cadence that swaps executions before concepts.

Measuring any of it honestly is its own discipline - the AI marketing ROI method covers counting the costs vendors skip, and if the ad account is your whole job, the PPC manager playbook maps the seat.
